Curriculum – Science

At Seaham Trinity Primary School we believe scientific understanding is essential to explain and make sense of everyday phenomena. Investigation is at the heart of our Science teaching and we endeavor to support and challenge children into becoming young scientists by teaching them to ask questions and seek answers through investigations which follow the scientific method in a safe and secure environment.

We value Science as a discrete subject and also as a vehicle for the teaching of other curriculum areas, especially Maths, ICT and Literacy. Through our Science teaching we provide opportunities for all children to achieve their potential by challenging and supporting at an appropriate level.

We ensure all children receive an excellent scientific education through teaching a balance of skills and knowledge and that our curriculum is enhanced by a variety of extra-curricular and extended opportunities in school and within the wider community e.g. Science day, Junior Sparkies events, external visits etc..

In foundation stage, science is taught as an integral part of the topic work covered over the year and is lead by the early learning goals for ‘knowledge and understanding of the world’ which has scientific content. The foundation stage curriculum is based around the ‘six areas of learning’.

In key stage 1 and 2, science is taught both cross curricular and discrete. Teachers use a variety of teaching styles and activities to teach Science. Investigative Science is at the heart of all science teaching and teachers will plan at least one investigation per half term.
