Our emphasis is on learning through stimulating, challenging activities which develop our children’s application of their mathematical skills. Through development of communication skills, children are encouraged to express their opinions and explain their reasoning, whilst using accurate mathematical vocabulary. In order to reach their true potential, an ethos of ‘having a go’ is being developed, raising children’s self-esteem and extending their conceptual thinking skills.
Throughout the school, Numeracy is taught using a variety of methods to support children’s differing learning styles. They are given the opportunity, once a concept has been learned, to use and apply their knowledge and skills to solve mathematical problems and challenges, and where possible, links are made to other areas of the curriculum. Above all, children are equipped with the skills to be able to independently approach and complete a task and transfer these skills into everyday life.
At Seaham Trinity, we monitor children’s progress on a regular basis, through both formative and summative assessment, using these to inform our future planning in order to maximise children’s potential by overcoming potential barriers, closing the gaps in learning and to improve teaching and learning for all children.
Individual’s progress is regular tracked and intervention put into place where needed. Children are given targets based on our assessments, and these are shared with children and their parents and monitored and reviewed frequently by teacher and pupil. Children are always encouraged to evaluate their own work and that of others during Numeracy lessons.
